LONGER SIDINGS AT BUXTON

THE SECRETARY of State for Transport has granted a Transport and Works Act Order for Network Rail to extend sidings at Buxton.

The order will allow NR to construct, maintain and operate an extension to the sidings in the Hogwash area of Buxton, together with associated works. A new section of footbridge will also be built to extend the existing public right of way over the railway works.

The scheme is part of NR’s Peak Forest to London Freight Programme, which aims to increase freight capacity between the Peak Forest and Hope Valley terminals and the capital by using longer trains. Part of this would involve lengthening freight trains from the Peak District quarries at Dowlow and Hindlow, facilitating an increase in capacity from 1,750 to 2,600 tonnes.
