Metro cab mock-up unveiled

Bright yellow livery: cab mock-up of the new Stadler trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro.

A cab mock-up from the new Tyne and Wear Metro fleet to be built by Stadler has been delivered to assist with workforce familiarisation.

Stadler is building 42 new Metro trains, which are due to enter passenger service in 2023, with construction starting this year and the first train to be delivered for testing in 2022. The mock-up boasts the full cab layout, a driver’s seat, a dashboard, and the exterior has the Metro’s yellow livery and destination displays. The mock-up was built based on feedback train crew provided using virtual reality technology last year, and the cab design will be further refined as crews visit the mock-up. Nexus, which owns and manages the Metro, hopes to put the mock-up on public display once Covid-19 restrictions have eased.
