Research improves reality

You wait 25 years for a useful research project, and then three come along at once

My previous writings on research were entitled ‘The death of Research’ (September 2010) and ‘Research – still dead’ (September 2015) – you might notice a theme. I have had a third part of this trilogy half-written for some time but, unsurprisingly, there was always something more interesting to write about.

Scrap that, because – in addition to the highly commendable research into sanding detailed in the previous story – amongst the thousands of documents listing research money hosed away like last night’s lager I refer you to ‘Tomorrow’s trains today’, part of the Department for Transport’s £3.5 million ‘Accelerating Innovation in Rail’ project, which has already brought you the standing up seat and the adaptable carriage where all the seats bunch up together (‘we’ve already got that’ – says a Thameslink passenger). This time £343,000 goes to AR Trainkit and Fantasia Express for a real bit of innovation: Augmented Reality. Well, if ever a reality needed augmenting… you’ve come to the right place folks.
