Central Belt enhancement hits major milestone

Speeds and resilience improved

The £6.8 million Perth enhancement scheme reached a major milestone with completion of track realignment and junction remodelling in early 2023.

A nine-month programme installed a new single line east of Perth station at Barnhill and remodelled a junction to increase line speeds over it from 20mph to 50mph.

Journey time improvements will ease capacity constraints between Perth and North East Scotland, improve performance resilience and potentially allow more freight to run on the route.

Attention now turns to installing a new crossover south of Dunblane station to enhance turnback facilities in the area. This is due to be completed before the start of the May 2024 timetable and is expected to significantly improve the line’s diversionary capability.
