Revolution for branch lines?

The Revolution Very Light Rail (RVLR) demonstrator vehicle has been launched by Eversholt Rail and Transport Design International.

The vehicle is based at Ironbridge, where the aim is to showcase it within a railway reopening environment on a disused line. The aim of the RVLR consortium is to have a vehicle approved and in passenger service by early 2024.

RVLR was born out of a challenge from the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) and the Department for Transport to provide an attractive, low-cost rolling stock solution which would encourage modal shift to rail and could support better services on branch lines and facilitate the reopening of disused lines. The project launched in 2014 and has involved consortium companies from the automotive, rail and other sectors.
