Trial operations start on Northern Line extension

Trial operations have started on London Underground’s 3km Northern Line Extension from Kennington to Battersea Power Station via Nine Elms.

The metro line is due to open this autumn, with six trains per hour serving the extension, increasing to 12 from mid-2022. Northern Line trains will run through the new tunnels every weekend in as close to the operational service as possible to allow staff to be trained and the railway and supporting systems to be thoroughly tested.

Later this summer, around 100 station staff will receive training to familiarise them with the new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station. Lifts, escalators and ticket machines are all in place, with commissioning due to be completed in the coming weeks.

It is predicted the extension will support around 25,000 jobs and more than 20,000 new homes.
